Let Know More About
Welfare Association Jared
Who We Are
Welfare Association Jared (WAJ) is a rights-based development and humanitarian organization working across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, since 1988. What began as a grassroots advocacy effort against deforestation in the Kaghan Valley has grown into a multi-sectoral organization addressing governance, protection, livelihoods, women's economic empowerment, civil documentation, and disaster response. We work closely with communities in Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, and beyond to build resilience and expand access to rights and services for the most vulnerable. Our programs are delivered in partnership with donors including the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, HOPE'87, USAID, Global Affairs Canada, and FCDO. At the heart of our work is a simple belief: lasting change is built with communities, not delivered to them.
Executive Director Message
Since 1988, Welfare Association Jared (WAJ) has walked alongside the communities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa first as a small, advocacy-driven voice speaking out against the deforestation of the Kaghan Valley, and today as a nationally recognized rights-based development and humanitarian organization. That journey, from a single environmental cause to a multi-sectoral mandate spanning governance, protection, livelihoods, women's economic empowerment, civil documentation, and disaster response, has been shaped entirely by the people we serve. Every program we design begins with listening to them.
We work in some of the most underserved corners of Hazara Division and beyond, often in places where formal systems are thin and the need is immediate. Our current flagship initiative, BeST-RAHAT implemented in partnership with HOPE'87 reflects the same principle that has guided WAJ for over three decades: resilience is built with communities, not delivered to them. Whether we are strengthening protection pathways for vulnerable host and returnee populations, supporting women's economic independence, or helping families rebuild after a disaster, our approach stays rooted in dignity, accountability, and local ownership.
None of this work happens in isolation. We are grateful for the continued trust of our partners and donors including the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, HOPE'87, USAID, Global Affairs Canada, FCDO, FAFEN, TDEA and others whose support allows us to reach further and respond faster. We are equally indebted to our field teams, whose daily commitment turns policy into practice, and to the communities themselves, who remain our truest teachers.
As WAJ looks ahead, we remain committed to strengthening the systems behind our work our governance, our monitoring and learning practices, our safeguarding standards so that the trust placed in us is always matched by the quality of what we deliver. We invite you to explore our work on this website, and we welcome partners, well-wishers, and communities who share our belief that lasting change is built together.
With gratitude,
Mukhtar Javed
