Ecological Rehabilitation

WAJ’s Ecological Rehabilitation and Climate Resilience Initiatives

Welfare Association Jared (WAJ) is committed to promoting environmental sustainability, ecological rehabilitation, and climate-resilient communities through practical, community-based initiatives. Over the years, WAJ has implemented a range of activities aimed at restoring degraded environments, promoting renewable energy, improving water conservation, and strengthening community awareness of environmentally sustainable practices.
Plantation and Green Development
With the support and technical collaboration of the Chief Conservator of Forests, Hazara Division, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, WAJ undertook plantation activities along the Hazara Motorway, contributing to the greening of the motorway corridor and promoting the restoration of local vegetation. The initiative reflects WAJ’s commitment to increasing green cover and encouraging environmentally responsible development.
Ecological Rehabilitation in Kaghan Valley
Under the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) project, WAJ implemented a community-based ecological rehabilitation initiative in Kaghan Valley. The project focused on demonstrating practical, low-carbon and climate-friendly solutions that could be adopted by local households and communities.
WAJ established five Environmental Demonstration Centres in four Union Councils of Kaghan Valley. These centres served as practical learning and awareness platforms where communities could observe and understand environmentally friendly technologies, including:
• Solar cookers promoting clean and renewable household energy;
• Solar dryers for environmentally friendly preservation of agricultural products;
• Solar mineral water plants demonstrating the use of solar energy for water-related needs; and
• Rooftop rainwater harvesting tanks promoting water conservation and improved household water security.
The demonstration centres provided communities with practical examples of how renewable energy, water conservation, and locally appropriate technologies can contribute to climate resilience and reduce pressure on natural resources.
Promotion of Fruit and Non-Fruit Trees
As part of the CFLI ecological rehabilitation initiative, WAJ also distributed fruit and non-fruit tree plants among communities in four Union Councils of Kaghan Valley. The plantation initiative aimed to increase local green cover, support ecological restoration, promote biodiversity, and encourage communities to take an active role in protecting and rehabilitating their natural environment.
Through these initiatives, WAJ continues to demonstrate that ecological rehabilitation can be integrated with community development, renewable energy, water conservation, and climate resilience. WAJ remains committed to working with communities, government departments, and development partners to promote greener, healthier, and more climate-resilient communities in Hazara and beyond.
